Annie Chau –India
Annie is a first-generation Vietnamese Canadian,feminist,and pesco-vegetarian who graduated with a BA in 2009 from
the University of Western Ontario in Media and the Public Interest. She has worked in communications for various nonprofits in Canada and the U.S. on issues ranging from women’s rights andHIV/AIDS awareness to public transportation policy. She is in Pune, India working on Street Source in partnership with Project Concern International India. It is a program that readies slum youth with job skills and connects these youth with employers. Though new to international development,she sees this as an opportunity to see how international partnerships can work towards local and sustainable solutions. She enjoys cruising downhill on her purple bicycle and having impromptu dance parties.
Heather Forbes –Sierra Leone

Heather grew up on Vancouver Island,and has spent most of the past six years in Vancouver,where she studied Communication and Dialogue at Simon FraserUniversity. She has enjoyed the privilege of working with BC First Nations in the government and non-profit communications sectors for the past 3 years. Her other community interests lie in public space and food security,and she explores these fields as a member of the Vancouver Public Space Network and the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project. She loves learning from new people,and even wrote her undergraduate Honours thesis on why pubs are great sites of civic discourse. She’s now stationed in Bo,Sierra Leone where she is offering communications support to HELP-SL. When she is not in the office,she is dancing. A lot.
Natalie Chong –The Philippines

Natalie hails from sunny Vancouver where she can be spotted strolling along the seawall with her dog or rocking out to a live band. She graduated with a BA in Global Studies from Wilfred Laurier University and has worked for various non-profit organizations such as Oxfam Canada,Canadian Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. She is enjoying the hustle and bustle of life in Manila,where she is working with Virlanie on Batang Philipino Ang Pag-asa (Filipino childre are the hope),a program with links street youth to stable employment through life and job skills training. Natalie loves exploring local markets,watching a good movie,Old Ducth ketchup chips,and of course the Vancouver Canucks!
Bryce Kapsha –Bolivia
Bryce started his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary thinking he was going to be an economist. Little did he know he was
going to be working on a development project in Bolivia after finishing school with a BA in Communications Studies and a BA in Latin American Studies. His interests include llamas,electronic music,youth involvement in the community,and life itself. While in Bolivia,Bryce will be working with Centro de Desarollo para la Edcucacion Alternativa (Centre for the development of an alternative education),as well as with many other organizations in South America. Bryce is excited about starting his work (at a high altitude!)
Anya Walsh –Sierra Leone
Anya calls Vancouver,BC home but has spent much of the past ten years working,studying and travelling the globe. Holding a B.A. in History and Sociology from Queens University and a M.A. in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University,she is deeply committed to contributing to socio-economic growth in the underdeveloped and developing world. In partial requirement of her graduate studies,Anya carried out a country wide MDG assessment in Uganda followed by an internship with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Freetown,Sierra Leone. Most recently Anya worked in the private sector building a social enterprise business line to an agricultural company operating in West Africa. Anya is excited to be returning to sweet Salone to contribute her skills to youth employment. In addition to a passion for travel and culture,Anya loves yoga,sports,reading and most of all the ocean –it just so happens that Sierra Leone has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!
Victoria Harris – Kenya
Originally from the small tourist town of Summerland,BC,Victoria has come along way and is based in the insanely busy city of Nairobi,Kenya,where she is working in Mukuru slums with Make A Better World Kenya (MABWOK). Her passion and love for youth and traveling has brought her around the world,working on youth programs,coordinating volunteers and assisting in the direction of numerous organizations and projects in New Zealand,Australia,Uganda,Rwanda,Abbotsford,BC and now,Kenya. Victoria believes this and many other factors in her upbringing and education in Sociology/Anthropology/Theatre have driven her to seek out a career that will satisfy her need for challenge,her love for Africa and her inability to accept the unequal development in the world. On the side,she’s got a constant need for outdoor activity,solid community and a kitchen to cook in. She also would like you to buy her a nice glass of red wine or a good coffee the next time you see her.
Gillian Moore –Ethiopia
Originally from the suburbs of Toronto,Ontario, Gillian has spent the past four years living in Kingston,Ontario,studying Political Science and Global
Development at Queen’s University. While her specific areas of interest pertain to issues of gender equity and youth outreach,herdesire to work to create a world where social justice,human rights and sustainable development exist for all people has brought her to Addis Ababa,Ethiopia. Partnered with Emmanuel Development Association (EDA),Gillian is working to develop the capabilities of marginalized youth,so that they can participate equally in the development of their communities,regions and country. Passionate about travel,culture,and the great outdoors, Gillian see’s this internship as an adventure! As well as an opportunity to grow,and learn.
Madison Mackenzie –Tanzania
Madison grew up in and around the Toronto region where she graduated from York University with a BA in Anthropology. Since then,she has had the opportunity to work in various fields all relating to the growth, education and development of children,specifically those with special needs. Although she is new to the international development field,Madison has seen first hand the need for effective and sustainable change through her extensive travels. She is now in Arusha,Tanzania working as a youth livelihood officer with Street Kids’microfranchise project partnered with Mkombozi,a leading changing force in Tanzania. In her spare time Madison will be exploring her new digs,hiking, trying new foods,meeting new friends and rocking out to all sorts of different music!
