Here are the bios from last years interns.

Hello from around the world! We are 8 young Canadians spending 10 months overseas working for Street Kids International as part of CIDA’s International Youth Internship Program. We are thrilled to have this opportunity and to share our stories from India,Nepal,Kenya,Tanzania,Sierra Leone,Bolivia,the Philippines and Ethiopia.

Aged 21 to 27 and from all over Canada,we bring with us different backgrounds and interests. Bu we’re all passionate about international development and working with youth.

James Achoneftos –Nepal

James joins the team having graduated from McGill University with a BA in Political Science and Cultural Studies,and from Humber College with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Fundraising and Volunteer Management. James has worked for various non-profit organizations including Oxfam Canada and the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation,and recently returned from Mombasa,Kenya where he co-developed and co-delivered HIV/AIDS and sexual health workshops to local peer educators. James is passionate about youth involvement and child rights,and looks forward to contributing his skills and knowledge to SathSath,Street Kids International’s partner organization in Kathmandu,Nepal. James spends his free time playing scrabble without any vowels,climbing things and playing in the rain!

Caitlin Evans –Bolivia

When people ask Caitlin what her hometown is,she has a hard time answering because she’s lived in so many places! She was born in Ottawa,but has called Edmonton,Kingston,Toronto and Guatemala home at various points in her life! She graduated from Queen’s University in 2006 with a degree in history,but after volunteering in Burkina Faso for three months she decided to pursue a career in development. After finishing her Masters in Public Policy and International Development from Carleton University,she went to Guatemala to live,study Spanish and volunteer at a women’s weaving cooperative. She’s very excited to spend 10 months in Bolivia for Street Kids International! When she’s not working,Caitlin likes to write,play board games,watch Lost and Star Trek and go out salsa dancing!

Virginia Kanyogonya –Kenya

Virginia is a Ugandan native currently residing in Toronto. She graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from York University. Virginia has worked in the financial industry for the past six years,but has always had a long-standing interest in International Development particularly when it comes to helping youth break down the barriers that prevent them from achieving their fullest potential.  She is therefore looking forward to the next ten months in Kenya where she will be representing Street Kids International. In her downtime,Virginia takes time out to enjoy Zumba classes,read,write and check out the new sushi spots in town.

 

Adam Camenzuli –Tanzania

Adam is a graduate of the International Bachelor of Business Administration (iBBA) program at the Schulich School of Business,York University (Toronto,Canada). He founded GLOBE,an international business conference and society,and has travelled internationally representing both his university and Canada. This includes the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy’s Young Leaders Forum (Berlin,Germany) as well as being selected as one of the top students in the world to attend Princeton University’s Business Today International Conference (New York,United States). He has studied at ESADE Business School (Barcelona,Spain) and his work experience includes Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (Ottawa,Canada),Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (Bonn,Germany) and General Motors,where he managed over 50 workers as a Production Supervisor. He has language skills in English,French,Spanish,German and Swahili. Adam has a keen interest in culture,renewable energy and international development.

Sarah Bleiwas –The Philippines

Sarah has been a student of philosophy and international development studies at McGill University,a volunteer on a refugee camp in Ghana,a farmers market coordinator in Montreal,and a vintage clothing store entrepreneur in Toronto. She is enthusiastic about the opportunity to collaborate with Street Kids International &Virlanie,where she will be working with street youth in Manila and learning a lot along the way. She is concerned about the world on an ethical level and hopeful about the potential for change to occur. When not pondering the present state of affairs,she occupies herself with building forts with friends,playing bridge,experimenting with spice concoctions,and sketching venn diagrams.

 

Dianne Denton –Tanzania

Dianne graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in International Development from Carleton University and a Master’s in International Education Policy from Harvard University. During her undergrad,Dianne spent a year studying at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania,so she is thrilled to be back speaking Swahili and eating chipsi mayai (French-fry omelettes)! Dianne has worked with international development NGOs in Boston and Ottawa,and developed youth-centered programs for Autism Ontario and the YMCA. Dianne is passionate about expanding opportunities for the most vulnerable children worldwide,and is excited to be working with Mkombozi in Arusha.

 

Sagal Abdulle –Sierra Leone

Sagal has received a BA from York University with a major in International Development Studies and Anthropology. She has worked for organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross and the YMCA developing youth programming for marginalized youth. She hopes to contribute to the lives of youth people by providing them with the opportunities to grow and navigate through their experiences by achieving their goals. She is a native of East Africa and can hardly wait to see the other side of the continent. Sagal loves the Lakers,Saints and a good book!

 

Alex Jameson –Ethiopia

Alex hails from Vancouver,BC and is a graduate of the University of British Columbia (BA –Political Science) and the University of New South Wales (MA –Development Studies). He travelled previously to Ethiopia in 2008 with Youth Challenge International and is looking forward to connecting with old friends and savouring the best coffee in the world. He has also previously interned in India,working with refugees. Alex enjoys snowboarding,swimming in the ocean,and running.  He passionately follows the Vancouver Canucks no matter his geographical location. He enjoys a good book,a great film,and good conversations with interesting people,preferably over cold drinks.
